The Art of Golf and the Method of Pilates

by James Crader, Energetic Care Instructor

Besides being at the top of their game, what do Tiger Woods, Annika Sorenstam, Rich Beam, Kelli Kuchne, Andrew McGee, Camilo Villegas, and countless other golfers have in common? The answer – Pilates. Ask any Pilates student the benefit of The Method, and they’ll praise its development of muscular control, flexibility, core strength, balance, relaxation, and increase of overall posture. Ask any golfer what they need to work on to improve their game, and you’ll undoubtedly hear a list of one or, more likely many, of the same.

Pilates is fast growing as a cross-training program for many athletes in many sports. It’s only natural that golfers would adopt the same training standards. Fast disappearing are the days of overweight outta shape pro-golfers. As well, leisure golfers are taking notice and training their bodies to function better within their sport. Golf is a physically taxing sport for a misaligned dysfunctional body. The common sore knees, tight achy back, shoulder / joint pains, and heavy feet are all a result of improper body mechanics. A good Pilates Instructor can help you specifically address where your body is in dysfunction, and guide you through a list of Pilates exercises designed to help increase your mobility, strength, and flexibility, and in turn strengthen your game and decrease risk of injury or strain.

Pilates builds the long lean muscles and the shoulder / hip / spine flexibility needed for the range of motion and power behind long drives. Bulky muscles (those built by standard resistance training, or tear-repair training) are not nearly as elastic, nor flexible, as those built by programs like Pilates and Yoga. So while the size may not seem as ‘impressive’ as a typical gym tone, the quality of the musculature is superior. You can’t think of Pilates without thinking of core strength. I have yet to meet one golfer who hasn’t wanted to increase his core strength. Rotational stability and power are driven by the deep core muscles, and the interaction of contraction and relaxation between the grouping – all of which is an integral part of the Pilates Method. And any discussion of Pilates would not be complete without the mention of control and relaxation. Pilates is a mind-body practice. It will help to create a stronger bond between what you want your body to do, and the outcome you receive from the effort you put forth. What is meant by that is, the more you practice Pilates, the more control you will have over your body (and thus your game).

Joining a Pilates class (especially one designed specifically for golfers) will undoubtedly help your game, and lessen the physical strain often associated with the sport. What you might not realize is how much it will improve the quality of your life off the course. Simply put, the Pilates Method principles are tried and true means by which to feel better within your own body. Attend a Pilates class, do it for your game. Do it for your self. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.
